huh, i had the impression that doing a phd was relatively lower-variance compared to, say, working at an early-stage startup, but maybe i'm wrong

oh no I agree! but it can be higher variance than some other options for physics bachelors

also when I say increasing variance isn't always good advice, I mean this in the context of the current funding situation and where people are choosing to do phds. my bad for being unclear (can you tell I wrote the post after a week of being very sleep deprived?)
